Reception/Year 1

Welcome to Reception/ Year 1 !

Summer term

This term the topic is 'Stories'. We have looked at the story 'Cinderella' and even wrote to a real member of the royal family- the Queen! The children have been looking at instruction writing and enjoyed writing instructions to tell the ugly step sisters how to brush their teeth.  We also followed instructions to make our own play dough to learn about capacity. We have also been looking at the story 'Little Red Riding Hood', the naughty wolf has eaten all of the sandwiches for Grandma so Reception and Year 1 will be making sandwiches and sending instructions to help Red make new sandwiches.

Term 2

Hands around the world

As seen in the overview handed out to you our new topic is 'hands around the world'. The last few weeks we have been looking at Africa and Antarctica. We have used maps and found out about continents. The children have researched different landmarks that are found in Africa and compared the climate of the Sahara desert to Wales. We have begun to create our own cave paintings and looked at African rock art to inspire us. We have also looked into textiles and are having a go at weaving.

Welcome to Reception and Year 1 Class!

Our topic this term is flight and as a class we have been focusing on butterflies. The children have enjoyed learning about the life cycle of the butterfly through the book 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle. To go along with our theme we have had our own caterpillars in class so that the children are given a first hand experience of the transition, they are currently at the cocoon stage and the children are patiently waiting for them to turn into butterflies. We have experienced and tried different fruits that butterflies like to eat and learnt all about how the butterflies eat their food. We have also investigated the different body parts of the butterfly and how they differ from us as humans.  The children enjoyed wrapping themselves up in their own blanket cocoon to experience what it would be like for the butterflies. We have also been doing lots of art and craft relating to butterflies such as making our own salt dough butterflies and using pastels and paint to create butterflies.
