  • A message to parents from the Director of Education, Swansea.

    Fri 25 Mar 2022

We have been kindly asked by the Director Of Education, Swansea, to share this message with you.

Local authority advice on control measures for risk infection in schools remains until the end of term.

Following this week’s meeting of the local Incident Management Team schools are advised to remain at HIGH on the Welsh Government’s Framework until the end of term. As soon as we have a further update from the Welsh Government, especially on the wearing of face masks, twice weekly-testing and the current self-isolation period following a positive test, we will write to you again. Control measures in schools will remain the same until after Easter, at least.

  • Raising money and planting Sunflowers for Ukraine

Olchfa Cluster Primary Schools – Helping Hands

We really seem to be moving to the other side of the pandemic with much relief. As one global incident comes to an end we are now faced with news of the terrible conflict in the Ukraine. As a cluster of schools, we would like to contribute to the efforts of the Red Cross who work tirelessly in areas of conflict. Over the coming weeks, every child will plant a sunflower seed. They will care for the plant and bring it home just before the Easter break. We have chosen sunflowers, as they are the Ukraine’s national flower. The sunflowers can then be returned to school to plant in the school garden. A date for their return will be shared with you in the summer term. We ask, if you are able to, please contribute a £1 per child to this venture with money collected going to the Red Cross. All donations can be placed in the donation buckets which will be located as you enter the school next week. You may find this a helpful resource in supporting our children with the situation in Ukraine.

All the money collected will then be added to a ‘Swansea Schools Appeal’ and the aim is to raise £10,000. If every child in Swansea donates £1 we could raise an amazing £30,000.The money will then get sent straight to the Red Cross who are on the front line of the crisis. It will be used to purchase much needed emergency medical supplies, shelter to those who have been displaced, give families access to food and water and relief items.

There is advice on the school website to support children and young people to manage anxiety over war, conflict and crises.

  • Language  Focus Week

    Fri 04 Mar 2022

‘Language’ week was enjoyed by all the pupils. The Crowman visited to tell the children stories. Everyone was captivated by the tales he told. This was a great way to start language week. Tuesday saw us celebrate our own Welsh language with drama and song. The children enjoyed acting out the story of St David and learning about Welsh myths and legends. The children also enjoyed a visit from Ynni Da, and hosted their own disco, powered by themselves through Pedal power! On Wednesday we started to learn a new language. We gave our brains a good work out by learning British Sign Language. The children have been busy practicing a part of a song to sing together using ‘sign and sing’ we are hoping to record our song this week and share it with you. We will let you know when it’s ready to watch. Thursday brought a whole host of new pupils to school including Unicorns, Matilda, and even a few dinosaurs. Thank you for supporting this day and making World Book Day a lot of fun and giving the children an opportunity to share books, recommend authors and build their confidence and apply knowledge in different contexts. Friday was our whole school Twmpath out on the yard, I am sure that you enjoyed watching the children dancing, Cylch Y Cymru, to traditional Welsh music. The video is on the school website. Click on the dragon on the ‘classes’ page to be entertained!

  • Advice to support children and young people to manage anxiety over war, conflict and crises

    Fri 04 Mar 2022

The following information has been provided by Swansea Education Authority for us to share with families.

Support children and young people to manage anxiety over war, conflict and crises.

War and terrorism are not easy for anyone to comprehend or accept. Understandably, many children and young people may feel confused, upset, and anxious. Parents, teachers, and caring adults can help by listening and responding in an honest, consistent, and supportive manner. Most children, even those exposed to trauma, are quite resilient. Like most adults, they can and do get through difficult times and go on with their lives. By creating an open environment where they feel free to ask questions, trusted adults can help them cope and reduce the possibility of emotional difficulties.

    Advice for Professionals

The consensus of advice provided nationally and by recognised professional bodies (e.g. British Psychological Society) is that we can support children and young people to manage anxiety over war, conflict and crises by following these key principles:

    • Give them the basics and don’t avoid the conversation
    • Ensure they feel supported and safe
    • Manage your own feelings
    • Explain to your children that bad things can happen in the world but there is always some way we can help
    • Avoid exposure to a constant stream of news
    • Watch where they are getting their news
    • Seek advice and support if you are concerned about your child
