Raising money and planting Sunflowers for Ukraine

Olchfa Cluster Primary Schools – Helping Hands

We really seem to be moving to the other side of the pandemic with much relief. As one global incident comes to an end we are now faced with news of the terrible conflict in the Ukraine. As a cluster of schools, we would like to contribute to the efforts of the Red Cross who work tirelessly in areas of conflict. Over the coming weeks, every child will plant a sunflower seed. They will care for the plant and bring it home just before the Easter break. We have chosen sunflowers, as they are the Ukraine’s national flower. The sunflowers can then be returned to school to plant in the school garden. A date for their return will be shared with you in the summer term. We ask, if you are able to, please contribute a £1 per child to this venture with money collected going to the Red Cross. All donations can be placed in the donation buckets which will be located as you enter the school next week. You may find this a helpful resource in supporting our children with the situation in Ukraine.

All the money collected will then be added to a ‘Swansea Schools Appeal’ and the aim is to raise £10,000. If every child in Swansea donates £1 we could raise an amazing £30,000.The money will then get sent straight to the Red Cross who are on the front line of the crisis. It will be used to purchase much needed emergency medical supplies, shelter to those who have been displaced, give families access to food and water and relief items.

There is advice on the school website to support children and young people to manage anxiety over war, conflict and crises.
